NORTHERN PIKE FISHING

Fishing for Northern Pike

While all fish are predators, northern pike genuinely look the part. With their long bodies, needle-like teeth, and big eyes, they can be aggressive and very satisfying to catch.

Where to find northern pike.

Generally, northern pike will hunt in shallow, weedy waters just offshore. However, they can go to deeper waters to hunt as well. If fishing in deeper water, turn on your depth finder and search for ledges.

Tackle and Lure Suggestions

Adapt your rod & reel to the lure size you want to cast.

We recommend a medium-heavy rod (length of your choice) with a 40-pound braided line for using average-size pike bait (2-3 ounces).

A medium rod with a 20-pound braided line would be enough to cast spoons such as a 3/4 ounce Five of Diamonds.

Either way, we recommend using an 80-pound leader made of fluoro, titanium, or steel.

Tips for Catching Walleye

Be careful when handling northern pike. They won’t just bite your line. Here are some tips for safely catching northern pike:

  • Hold smaller pike across the back of the head behind the eyes and use a net to catch larger ones
  • Mix up your fishing set and try both shallow and deeper water
