WHAT MAKES OAK LAKE FISHING SPECIAL?

While the remote location can sound intimidating, that’s where the beauty of Oak Lake really lies. We’re the only lodge on the lake. Because there is no access for weekend fishers, our lake is healthy, thriving, and full of fish. So book your trip today and find out how good the fishing is.

WALLEYE

Prized for their tasty fillets, Walleye are identifiable by their toothy jaws, olive gold color, and milky-colored eyes. They are a favorite when it comes to recreational fishing.

MUSKIE

Generally easier to catch in the fall, Muskies can be a tricky and rewarding fish to catch. They are an apex predator and eat lots of different fish.

SMALLMOUTH BASS

Abundant in most northern lakes, smallmouth bass can be an exciting fish to catch for new and experienced fishers alike. They are incredibly active and can be seen all year round.

NORTHERN PIKE

While all fish are predators, northern pike genuinely look the part. With their long bodies, needle-like teeth, and big eyes, they can be aggressive and very satisfying to catch.

Catch and Release

All of the fishing at Oak Lake is catch and release. The only fish we keep are the walleye we cook for your daily shore meals. This keeps our populations healthy and thriving and means you can catch some hefty fish in Oak Lake.

Handling Fish

Reduce handling as much as possible (destroys the slimy protective coating on fish)

Do not squeeze or touch the gills

Keep fish in the water, over the side of the boat, or in a tub

Grasp the fish just behind the gill covers

Use long-nose pliers to remove the hook quickly without tearing or injuring the fish

If you must release a fish that is hooked deeply, cut the line and leave the hook in

How to Release

Hold fish upright in a swimming position in the water, moving it slowly forward so that water runs through the gills, releasing the fish when it begins to swim in an upright position.

Licensing

You will need to purchase an Ontario Conservation Fishing License for your trip. You can arrange this ahead of time or buy one at the Lodge when you arrive.

Hiring a Guide

While guides are not included in our fishing packages, they can enrich your time at Oak Lake Lodge. They can show you where the best fishing spots are and help less experienced fishers feel safe and comfortable. Having the extra help can keep your trip relaxing and low maintenance.

Ask about guides for your next fishing trip when you book.
